Short description of the literary process behind the writing of the utopian socialist novel "Looking Backward, 2000-1887" (published January 1889). Bellamy reveals that in the first draft he had postulated a future in the year 3000 and centered his story in Asheville, North Carolina, rather than Boston, Massachusetts in AD 2000.
